Municipal Market (Agora)The Municipal Market is located in the centre of the town, in the heart of the city, where the main bastion of the fortifications stood in Venetian times. Up to the late 19th century this was the edge of town. Τhis was the farmers' street market, where villagers brought their goods for sale. There were rough butchers, fishmongers, inns and grocers. It was built on the site of the Venetian platform bastion and a large section of the Venetian walls, had to be demolished, in order to modernize & develop the city. Ιn 1908 the Municipality of Chania built a covered municipal market. Building work began in 1911 and was opened in 1913, by Eleftherios Venizelos. It is in the shape of a cross and has four doors, one to each arm, which are shut to secure the shops inside. The market has 76 shops, including butcher shops, fish shops, general stores and a chemist. It is one of the most impressive covered markets in the Balkans.

Today you will find many little shops inside, bakeries, traditional craft shops, food markets, herb shops, fish market, meat market and a couple of coffee shops and restaurants.
