  • Elafonisi - Hrisoskalitissa

At 73 km from Platanias, you will find Elafonisi. It is one of the most rare and beautiful landscapes in all Europe: an extensive beach of unique beauty that overlooks the Libyan sea and an island that you can even walk to!Elafonisi beachThe water is not higher than an adult's knee! Here, amongst the rare vegetation, we can find a kind of cedar tree and sand lilies that grow nowhere else in Europe. An area of about 2,000 acres of the seaside is protected by "NATURA 2000". All facilities are pretty much underdeveloped (parasols and small canteens), so it would be a good idea to bring along supplies (mostly water) which you can buy from the villages you will meet on your way (Elos and Vathi).

Only 5 km. from Elafonisi, by a small detour, you can visit the historical monastery of Hrisoskalitissa. The monastery is open for the public, and the hospitable monks will be glad to guide you through the grounds. Here you will also find fresh running water.

  • Falassarna

At 45 Km west of Platanias you will find Falassarna beach. Falassarna beach has won prizes for being the most beautiful beach in Crete and is always one of the top ten beaches in Europe, with its wonderful, fine white sand and warm, crystal-clear water.

Falasarna beachThe beach of Pachia Ammos is so big that it rarely feels overcrowded even in high summer, when you are surrounded by hundreds of people.

The only drawback is that the beach is exposed to northerly and westerly winds, so there are often large waves. This, of course, makes it all the more attractive to windsurfers.

Falassarna beach is fully organised, with umbrellas and loungers covering most of the area. However, there are several free spots for those who would rather bring their own towel and beach umbrella.

There are two bars and caf├ęs on the beach, providing snacks, water or coffee. Beach parties are often organised in the evening, so don't be in a hurry to leave - the fun begins as the sun goes down, with what is admittedly one of the most impressive sunsets in Crete.

Watersports are available on the beach, while there is also an area for beach volley.

  • Secluded Beaches

Apart from the well organized beach of Platanias there are quite a few secluded beaches just a stroll away where you can enjoy natural beauty in isolation. Ask reception for information on how you could visit such beach.
